Imagine this for a moment—

You work hard every day. You raise your family, you invest in your future, you contribute to your community…

But you have no legal right to the home you live in.

You can’t own land.

You can’t make decisions about your property.

You can’t build something and pass it down.

That was reality for many before America gained independence. Back then, homeownership wasn’t a right—it was a privilege.

So, what changed?

When America declared its independence in 1776, it wasn’t just about leaving British rule—it was about creating a nation where individuals had the right to build something for themselves.

“Homeownership in the United States became a central piece of the American Dream—an idea tied closely to freedom, self-reliance, and opportunity.”¹

That moment in history laid the foundation for everything that came after—including the right to own your own home.

Then vs. Now: What Independence Means for Homeownership

Before Independence

Under colonial British law:

  • Land ownership was tightly controlled.

  • Property rights were often limited to the wealthy and politically connected.

  • Most colonists were tenants on land they didn’t own.

“Only about 10% of colonists owned land outright before independence.²”

That meant limited freedom, little security, and almost no ability to build long-term wealth.

After Independence

Post-1776, our founding ideals shifted:

  • Property rights were written into the DNA of the new nation.

  • Land ownership became more accessible to everyday Americans.

  • The right to own land was no longer a privilege—it was a protected right.

“Property rights were considered essential to liberty and democracy in the new republic.”³

From there, the idea of owning a home grew into what we now call the American Dream.

What Homeownership Means Today

Homeownership isn’t just a goal—it’s a personal form of freedom. It gives you:

  • Stability – No one can decide your next move but you.

  • Control – Your space, your choices.

  • Wealth-building – Your home can grow with your financial goals.

  • Legacy – Something to pass down and build on.

“Homeowners have 40 times more net worth than renters, on average.⁴”

It’s about more than real estate—it’s about owning your future.

This July 4th, Ask Yourself:

“Am I living in the freedom I now have the right to build?”

This holiday is a reminder of where we came from—but also of what’s possible today.
